I’m not real sure why they have this tradition. It’s not like anyone out here ever square dances…ever! I have never heard of an Ohio square dance in all the years I’ve lived here.
I’m sure that learning to square dance does help a lot with coordination and learning to follow directions and a million other things that teachers need to help our kids learn each year though. And it’s fun! That has to count for something.
Last week when I was in Dallas, I (of course!) forgot to buy gifts for the kids until I was in the airport. That means they each got an incredibly overpriced “Texas” t-shirt as their gift from me. When Wyatt came home saying “I have to dress up like a cowboy tonight!” there was no talking him out of wearing that t-shirt. He, like me, believes that there should be cowboys all over the place when your plane touches down in Texas. I was sorely disappointed when I realized that there are almost no cowboys to be found in Dallas. I’m not going to tell Wyatt about that and break his little heart.
So, I got home from Dallas (after the nightmarish, neverending flight home) and then the next day took off to go through four parent-teacher conferences and then to watch Wyatt at his Square Dancing Event.
Now, I know absolutely nothing about square dancing but I can tell you this…watching a bunch of “cowboy” and “cowgirl” First Graders square dance is just about the cutest thing ever!
And they are very serious about it.
You get to see do-si-do’s:
And “recognizing your corner”:
And “twirling your partner around”:
{I could quite possibly have put all of those terms with the wrong photos though, so please just let me live in my blissful ignorance if I’m wrong about that.}
And then the blasted PE teacher announced that she “was going to provide an opportunity for the parents to square dance with their children as well.”
After a heated, whispered conversation with the hubby…guess where I ended up?!
“Thankfully” the hubby grabbed my camera and took no less than 27 shots of me square dancing with Wyatt, Will and Weslea.
God bless him…
The PE teacher redeemed herself though by providing a second opportunity for the parents to dance with their children.
Paybacks are so much fun!
No, seriously. Paybacks really are amazing things.
It’d be difficult to find something much cuter than this little “Texan” toothless wonder cowboy on his square dancing night!
Can I hear a “Yeeeeee-Haaaaawwww”?!

How cute! And payback is a wonderful thing :)
oh.my.goodness.
Those pictures are stinkin' cute!
And the kids will cherish these as they get older.
You know you had fun! Look at that huge smile. It looks exciting. I am one to never turn down a dance in front of complete strangers and have my picture taken for posterity. The next best thing is to have someone take out their camera/video-phone and record the dance and put it on youtube. I wonder if Sweetypie did that . . . hmmm.
He is just adorable!! Does he go to school in South Arkansas because I had to do that in p.e. too! I didn't like my partner (he was a boy, cooties...) I wouldn't hold his hand so I made him stick his arms inside his shirt and held his shirt...haha I was a weird kid.
Yee haw! How cute!! My school did square dancing in 5th grade, and I loved it. But I can imagine that it would be so adorable with 1st graders.
Sooo sweet!
Square dancing in PE must be some midwestern philosophy. My New Jersey husband still can't understand it...
Looks funny! You probably enjoyed you're payback very much :)
Although you look like you had fun :)
Great photos, Angie. Love the sepia look - goes great with the theme.
Hubby and I actually attended a square dance once and loved it. Just our bad knees prevented us for pursuing it as a hobby.
You look adorable and so thrilled to be dosy doeing and all that stuff!
I actually did decide that if I had to do it, I might as well have fun at the same time. This girl is so not a good dancer though (from all those years of attending a non-dancing Baptist school.) lol!
@Jenna - I am laughing so hard at your story. You seriously made him put his arms inside his shirt?! That's priceless!
OMG - ADORABLE! What a fabulous memory for you guys...and so great to have captured it! I can remember square dancing as a child, too, and always thought that was so weird!
YeeHaw! Those are so wonderful, Angie! And what a fun way to teach kids coordination, following directions, listening skills, and just that exercising doesn't have to be drudgery! I'm so glad your hubs was there and could get pics of you dancing (and vice versa). Because some day, when your kids are all grown up and you are gone, those will be more priceless than gold....trust me.
I love the pictures of your toothless son, I think those are the best! I have a 6 year old who is in the "in between tooth stage", some have fallen out, some are growing in! The pictures are great memories!
He is SO cute : ) Oh my goodness so cute. It makes me wish you were going to produce again. I mean, what is one more? You already have the puppy : )
You are so pretty! You always have the best smile. And the best jewlery. I meant to tell you that when I met you. I think people that can always accesorize so well are the coolest.
What a fun tradition! I think Ohio is FULL of square dancing. You just need to go to the local Senior Citizen Center :)
Hey, who knows why they do it, but what a wonderful activity! And you look great out there.
I remember having to learn to square dance in Kindergarten at the end of the year. Then we did our dance for the parents at Kindergarten Graduation. I don't know if they still do it or not now that the teacher I had isn't there, but I know every kindergarten class she had did the square dancing.
aw so cute!!!! :) i remember having to learn all the dosido's in third grade!!! :) awesome shots! :)
So cute and fun!
sandy toe
Didn't know they did this at school...too funny though. Pix are great and what family memories....now I'll date myself...I graduated from that school system....and one of my "first dates" in the day was actually a New Year's eve square dance :) Luckily I had a grandfather that used to "call" dances and I attended many. Can be a really fun interacting activity....take your kids to the fair next year during the day they have some of the groups performing....but what fun! Still enjoying your blogs even though I don't often have time to comment or post.
Do you want to here something really funny? When i went to this school and was in around 3rd grade we did this too. The best thing though is that my aunt and uncle used to have square dances in there barn. I was an old pro!!
Cute and fun, and so very sweet. I'm glad Bill got pictures of you with the kids. Those are precious pictures, precious moments.
Thanks for sharing them with us!
Hilarious! Yeeeee Haw!!! You make a good square dancer.
I love it! I remember doing that in school too! It must be rural living! haha... your little boy is adorable and you looked like you were having fun, but paybacks are wonderful!!
