It was while I was viewing Ree’s photography and photoshop tutorials that I began to think “Hey! Maybe I could learn to do that with my photos!” And I’ve spent quite a bit of time over the past two years trying to do just that.
From Ree’s site, I was drawn to Donna Boucher’s blog. Originally just because I enjoyed the photography tips she shared. It didn’t take me long to realize what a beautiful spot Donna had created on the net though and I stuck around because of her warm, loving spirit and the beautiful friendships I had made over there.
From Donna’s site, I met Amy. And between Amy and myself a website called I Heart Faces was born. :)
Which brings me to the point of this post. One of my very, very, very favorite things about I Heart Faces is that I am in charge of the Guest Photographer Judge schedule. Through that I have actually gotten to “talk” with some of my photography heros…people like Ree, Donna, Becker, Jasmine Star and so many others. And Sheye Rosemeyer!!! (I love Sheye’s photography and website so much.)
So, when Amy called me last November and told me that she was going to stand in line at a Dallas bookstore to attend Ree’s cookbook signing, my first thought was “Wow, it’d be cool to meet Ree in person!” and then right after that my second thought was “But you couldn’t pay me to stand in that line to do it.”
I hate crowds. I hate long lines. I hate to cook. So, I basically told Amy that she was nuts for even considering standing in those lines (some up to 8 or more hours long?!) but to have fun and to say “Hi!” to Ree for me.
Amy then stood in that line and called me to tell me how much fun she was having because…she was meeting all kinds of I Heart Faces fans in that line!
That’s when I got jealous. Standing in line and meeting I Heart Faces fans? I would have been there in a heartbeat because that sounds like fun.
Eventually I got over it and life moved on until December when I received a surprise package in the mail.
It seems that while Amy was standing in line meeting I Heart Faces fans, she wasn’t just holding one book to have Ree sign…she was holding two.
And one was sent to Ohio to little old me.
That was a pretty cool Christmas gift!
Here’s where the weird part occurred though.
I looked through the cookbook and oohed and aahed in the appropriate places, and then set it aside like I do every single cookbook that I have owned over the years.
And that’s when a certain Miss Weslea confiscated it and decided that she needed that book more than I did.
Now every time I fold laundry, sit down to read, work on the computer or do any other task in this house…she sits down with me to regale me with tales of living on a ranch in Oklahoma.
Weslea: Did you know that we only have four kids but The Pioneer Woman has six?
Me: No, she only has four kids…just like us.
W: You’re wrong mom. This picture shows that she has six kids.
M: Two of those are cousins of her kids.
W. Oh. {pause} Well, I think she should have six kids.
M: If I ever have the opportunity to meet her, I’ll be sure to pass that information along.
Weslea: She has dogs!!!!!
Weslea: Oh my gosh! Her husband is wearing a pink shirt!!!! She says that “real men” wear pink shirts!
W: Look at this mom!
M: Oh, you like the cowboy page do ya? {wink, wink}
W: {indignant and serious} I do not! Look at the cows and horses!
W: I think we need to move to Oklahoma to live on a ranch.
M: No thank you.
W: But they have dogs…and horses….and cows…and hay bales!
M: And they have lots and lots of stinky smelly poop.
W: I still think we should move there.
M: Let me say it again. Poop? No. Thank. You.
Amy, I’d have to say that you scored big and your Christmas gift was a tremendous hit.
Weslea thanks you from the bottom of her heart.
Oh, and so do I. :)

LOL Angie! I live one mile north of a feedlot and even it is not that bad. Some days (like after a thaw or rain) it smells worse than others, but you get used to the smell. Horse and cow poop just doesn't stink like dog or cat poop. They eat hay and grass and grains for Pete's sake! You should totally move to Oklahoma (or Kansas). Then again, you know how I love Ohio. Ohio is very nice:o)
When we went down to Pawhuska for the book signing, I was standing in line with 5 of those books: one for me, one for MIL, one for SIL, and one for each of my girls. The cookbook has been a big hit all around. I know my girls won't use it much right now, but I hope it's something they'll treasure for a long time to come. And right now they're just enjoying the pictures and stories of ranch life. Everyone loves to look over my shoulder when I'm reading Ree's blog, so of course they like the book.
My daughter has done the same exact thing! She reads it like a book and I always hear her giggling in the background.
I've cooked with it, too. Oh my! So very, very yummy.
Maybe it's dairy farms then Jenni...you pass a dairy farm in Ohio and you literally wish your nose would fall off your face. And pig farms too. UGH!
Okay - so maybe a ranch isn't as stinky or smelly as I thought it'd be. Tell Ree to invite me so that I can find out firsthand, okay? ;)
Beautiful beautiful pictures!
And yes Ree's blog is amazing.
You guys should seriously come to Pawhuska with me sometime!! Ha! It would be a blast. You would be glad you don't live near cows after that trip:-)
So glad you liked your gift! I stood there long enough to get it for ya:-) Oh... I got the LAST 2 books. Whew.
Angie-
I *heart* this post on so many levels. I love a girl getting caught up in a great book (and make no mistake, PW's cookbook is also a great book!!). I love a post that tells a story from a snippet in time. And I love yours and Amy's friendship. :-)
And, of course, I empathize with so much of you. I love reading about ranch life, but have NO desire to live it. I detest lines, but *might* show up for awhile if I thought I could meet some fun-loving IHF-ers.
I was in that line in Dallas! These are great pictures! So pretty, and you captured such wonderful expressions. And while I admire Ree a great deal, and am totally fascinated by her life, I am with you...never, never, never could I deal with the poop. I can't stand thinking about my kids stepping in dog doo in our yard (and we don't have dogs!). :)
That is such a fun cookbook to look at!!!

What a sweet post. I love when my kids get interested in any kind of reading. It is exciting to find out more about their interests and how their little brains operate. Weslea is simply beautiful. Your friend is very kind, too.
I love this post and it's nice knowing that I'm not the only lady who doesn't exactly swoon in the kitchen. ; )
My bestie got me that book for Christmas too! love love love it! I literally sat done and read it cover to cover that very night. I made the cinnamon rolls and they were a HUGE and I do mean HUGE hit. 7 pans of rolls gone lightning quick. and the only thing my mother wants for her birthday is for me to stock her freezer with more of them. :-)
and court said to tell wes Hi!!!
Pig farms stink. Just no 2 ways about it. Hoofed stock produces a *lot* of manure and urine (and the urine breaks down to ammonia which helps the stink factor), so in a more confined area than a ranch the odor builds up far far more quickly than it would in a large open area. For all that PW says she has to clean cow poo off her porch (unless it's a bottle calf) I really doubt it. My guess would be that the cow/calf herds are kept a good distance away from her home. So, it would not have the odor factor you worry about. Besides, I am sure you and the family would be bunked up in that gorgeous guest house she remodeled last year and *I* want to go there for a week.
However, seeing how Weslea felt about Willow, it could be hazardous to your budget to allow her to go riding.....Ohio is one of the most horse dense states in the east and there are more horse events, at more levels of participation in Ohio than in most of the states that surround it. I can see it now, you go for the social aspects and Weslea has such a grand time she now decides that she wants riding lessons>which leads to friends who show>which leads to friends who show>which leads to showing and all the stuff that goes with that and then finally THAT>leads to buying a horse which all leads to an endless drain on your budget.
Don't go. Just take my word for it(we are now up to 3 equine members to our family)......it's not the stink factor you have to worry about, it's the potential disaster to your finances!
This was so fun to read! Reminds me I need to order a few more of her cookbooks for friends. They all hear me rave about this "Pioneer Woman" and her fantastic recipe book so they want one.
If Oklahoma is too far to travel you can always head up north and visit our funny farm!
A fun read, Angie! And Weslea is getting more beautiful all of the time! I like her excitement over the book and ranch life! lol
Loved your story! I KNOW I won't survive on a farm. I like sleeping in too much!
Those photos of your daughter are absolutely beautiful, she has the most gorgeous eyes!
You are so sweet! Thank you for your words on my picture and picking it for the Logo contest. I love the time you took to explain your thoughts on it. :):):) I am honored. :)

Oh...and one more thing....if she wants to learn about ranching, have her check out Just Another Day on the Prairie blog. Linda is an outstanding photographer and she has cool cool stuff to say about real ranching too!

This is absolutely hilarious - i love that she's so obsessed! :-) gorgeous pictures too (as always) . . . I hope Ree reads this!
Awesome post and awesome images. Loved it all from start to finish!
I love you Angie!
Your kind words make me cry.
Thank you for being my friend.
Loved the pictures of Weslea and the cookbook! I used to do that when I was her age- I just devoured cookbooks!
Maybe she will be a great chef someday...?! And you can sit in her bistro and say, " It all started when..."
What a sweet post. Weslea looks so young and innocent in these photos. Don't you just want to tell her to QUIT growing up??
This post was so wonderful to read! I can't ever comment on my phone, so please know that I do read regularly!
I totally feel you about the smell of farms... EEEKS! I love that Weslea was so into the book. She looks completely enthralled. She is so beautiful! : ) I love seeing her face in the I Heart Faces banner each week! I know she was there before but now her picture is bigger : )
Weslea is so beautiful!!
