The Drama of the New Camera

Amy and I have both been sent emails asking “When in the world is Angie ever going to add her Blissdom photos to the Flickr group?!?!?”
dancing2 (Jen Johnson dancing with one of Harry Connick Jr’s band members!!  That girl is gorgeous and knows how to have fun!)

Oi vey.
dancing3 (Beckie, a blogger that we met while dancing and fell in love with.  That girl knew how to get down, dance and have a good time.  She was a hoot to hang out with.)

The problem is that the day before I left for Blissdom, my “big girl camera” arrived.  Which is a good thing!  It’s a beautiful, wonderful, amazing Canon 5D Mark II and I am LOVING it.  I mean, it literally brings tears to my eyes to know that I actually own such an incredible camera now after shooting with a dinosaur of a camera for so many years.
dancing4 (The amazing Laurie – a.k.a. “Tip Junkie” – and Angry Julie whom I quickly realized is not really angry at all. She's very happy, fun and sweet.  I fell in love with both of these ladies too.)

But, as soon as I uploaded the images to my computer I realized that Photoshop CS3 does not recognize any of the RAW files I shot while I was at the conference.
dancing5
(Despite what it looks like, I promise that Amy is not flipping me off in this photo.  She is doing her crazy dancing fingers move.  Whatever that might be!)

After doing a bit of research on Google, I learned that in order for me to view my RAW files in Photoshop CS3, I needed to download a free DNG converter which now converts all of my thousands of RAW files to DNG files.  I still couldn’t actually view each DNG file though without opening each and every one into PS first, so I then downloaded a free DNG file viewer and I now have to go through that special program to view my DNG files and then go to a different folder to actually open the DNG file that I want to edit.

dancing6 (Amy dancing with Flat Tidy Mom.  They had the best time hanging out together that night.)

Did you fall asleep while reading that last paragraph because it sounds like a bunch of gobblygook?

I'd fall asleep too if it wasn't so darn frustrating!
dancing7 (Laurie and Amy showing off their “runway moves.”)

Long story short?  As soon as I can possibly afford it I am upgrading to Photoshop CS4 because this whole process is making. me. crazy.

As in “I-want-to-pull-my-hair-out-because-this-is-making-me-so-crazy” crazy.

{sigh}

I truly do love my camera though!  Drama and all.

Hi Ang...

Lightroom is usually less than $100 and you can view raw in there and export to both jpg and web size in a single move.

So if you want to keep your CS3 software and wait a bit - rumor is that cs5 will be out pretty soon anyway.

Lr eliminates the need for the converter. And it's cheaper than upgrading. :)

Do you have Bridge (it comes with the CS3 suite)? It opens the RAW files no problem, comes with Camera Raw for editing, and allows you to browse in batch.

What a blast you girlies had! How fun. Enjoy that new camera and crank that ISO! Yay! No noise at 400 ISO hey? LOL!
You brought up a good point about these big girl cameras and RAW format not working in Photoshop. Future entry on I Heart Faces?
Can't wait to see more pics with that big Canon........

Hey Darcy - I own LR already...just am intimidated by it and need to make myself learn it. I am one of those rare people that prefer to edit in PS (I like the little routine I use in it.) It looks like I may need to force myself to learn LR though!

Krista - Bridge in CS3 cannot open RAW files from the Canon 5D Mark II. My google research shows that it's because the camera was made after CS3 and so it only supports RAW files from cameras that were made before CS3 was launched. To open RAW files from my new camera I will need to upgrade to a newer version of PS. RAW files from my old Canon Rebel are fine, but (obviously) I'd prefer to shoot with my new camera.

Darcy is right though. I had forgotten the rumors that CS5 might be here sometime in the near future. That is a definite consideration I need to keep in mind before I upgrade.

I know nothing of your fancy gooblygook speak, but those pictures are fabulous.

Those faces.

Those friends.

That joy.

Bliss.

I know, I know, I'm always teary.....

Congrats in the new camera, Angie!! Alas, we are no longer "twins" with our Canon Xt's, but since you are pursuing a business and I am forever in "hobby land", you need to have shiny new wheels to use.

I hope you iron out all of your wrinkles early - that can be so frustrating.....

Congrats again!

Angie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm practically crying happy tears with you!!! Congrats on getting your Big Girl camera :-).
And I ditto Darcy. LR is the bomb for RAW conversion and really truly it plays nicely with PS. I promise.

and yikes. you're shooting everything raw with the 5dm2 at 25mb per pic?!?!?!? that's a whole lotta hard drive space :-}

I know Susan! LOL! My camera arrived at my home on Wednesday evening (thank you Arlington Camera!!) and then I took off for Nashville at 4:00 am the next morning.

My settings were all wrong for most of the weekend, but I'm learning. I think! ;)

wrong settings and all... these photos are great! It seems so dumb but seriously it is like learning to ride a bike again with a new camera! My husband doesn't understand it... he thinks they are all the same- point at your subject and then click~! Now I wish it were that easy! When I went from Olympus to Nikon... I hated my new camera at first... locating the buttons, new functions, even the lenses took time getting used too. You will soon be a pro in no time! I cannot believe you got a new camera... I am oh sooo very jelous. Did you get any cool lenses for it

one of your comments said lightroom was $100.00 ... where did she find that... I found it cost about $300!!! I need to look into it. I did download a free trial on LR and it seems pretty cool once you learn it but it has been a challenge to learn! I should take some classes online

Steph - if you know someone who is a college student OR if you are a homeschool educator, you can purchase LR for around $100 and you can purchase PS for much less than the listed cost as well.

My SIL bought both versions me (she is going to grad school) about two years ago. I think I spent $300-$350 for both program. Amazing deal!

a) I obviously need to cozy up to a college student real soon.
b) What a bummer... to get a new, honkin' crazy "oh WOW" camera and then find that it's SO new that your software can't handle it.
c) Pfffft... it's a racket! I obviously missed the boat and should have gotten into computer programming on the front end. I would be enormously wealthy and laughing (in a well-bred way of course...) at your dilemma.
And since I don't have PS at ALL and have to hop between about 5 different editing programs to get anything close to what I like, I can actually sympathize with you for once. In a teeny, tiny way... because thosepicturesaretotallyamazingandyouobviouslyhavewaaaaaymoretalentthanme!
Just sayin' (and Amy and Flat TidyMom got awfully cozy on that trip, didn't they? Just an observation).

Oh my gosh. I am SO happy for you Angie. When I saw your blog title I screamed for joy! And then I had to explain to Shoshi and Kaishon and Jonathon exactly why I was screaming. SO excited for you!

Love these pics. Can't wait to see more, although it sounds like it is really stressful, so I won't hold my breath :)

These photos are beautiful and it was so much fun at Blissdom, isn't it? However, you need to make sure you get captured in some of these amazing photos next. You are too darn cute to always be behind the camera.

Angie,

I was going to recommend Lightroom to you, but then glanced through all your comments ~ so I won't. :)

Congrats on your fancy, new camera!

Good gracious...those dancin photos!!!

I have the creative suite and use Bridge, but still convert to DNGs. After a shoot or wedding, I download, then convert immediately. After a while, it goes fast.

HOWEVER...

I've got LR and am switching over my workflow process this week. Keep your fingers crossed for me as I go for it!

Angie - The Arthur Clan said...

Jen - you need to teach me all of your LR smarts!! Pretty please?!

Beth@Pages of Our Life said...

Congratulations!!!!!

Okay, about LR...you can learn it in an afternoon..I promise. Go to {Scott Kelby Online Training} Pay for one month and watch all of the classes with Matt. You will be breezing in less than 2 hours.

The cool thing is you can edit 1 picture and LR will transfer that edit to the entire batch. Wa La!

Big {Hug} to you!!

Ha - I got beat to it - I was gonna suggest Bridge. Gorgeous pics woman!!! Email me - I have a present for you :)

Just when I think I'm beginning to understand all this photography lingo, I read something that has me scratching my head! As much as I covet the big girl cameras (and I saw plenty of them @ Blissdom), I know I need to master my little Canon Rebel (and learn some more lingo) before I "graduate"!

Love your pictures, Angie! It was fun meeting you at Blissdom and being in the photography workshop with you. Your portrait tips were wonderful!

OH Angie! i am drooling over here. Congrats on getting your big girl camera!! you are so lucky!!
Totally understand and sympathize with your uploading drama.
Soon it will become second nature to you.
Now go play with your new camera. and Have fun!!

Your new camera is amazing. I've always loved your photography but girl, now it's a WOW. I'm a little sad since I can't hope to achieve anything similar with my little Rebel, but on the other hand,it inspires me to save my pennies for a big girl camera. :)

Oh Angie...that is a sad story...and an expensive one (the having to upgrade part). I, too, had an awesome time hanging out and I am sure I am grateful you can't get the files...way too many discriminating pictures of me I am sure.
